Yup! You heard me, the latest media wacko story has landed and is based around sending willing participants on a one way mission to Mars.
The company Mars One aims to send 4 amateurs to space in 2023 as part of a reality TV series which will follow the lives of these 'first settlers' and witness their historic success or possible lethal death by radiation, starvation (or alien invasion)
And just when you thought, 'who on earth would sign up for such a ridiculous scheme?', maybe you could ask the 10,000 people who have submitted application for the space trip.
Now of course the cost for something so extreme would be up in the billions, 5.9 billion actually... The only justification for this ridiculous price being the profit returned in media interest, interview demand and royalties from the television series. Perhaps some keen billionaire would bribe his or her way into the passenger seat for this dead end mission?
However, crediblity is due in way of Dutch Nobel laureate Gerard 't Hooft, who won the physics prize in 1999 - reflecting the importance of a credible spokesperson for any project.
Obviously there will be hesitance to this trip, especially from the less than positive prospective of living in such dire conditions for the rest of your life, not to mention the ' inability to return to Earth',
In addition, it's hard to measure the productivity and success of 4 strangers from diverse backgrounds and perhaps languages. If the team can't communicate well and efficiently through establishing stable leadership frameworks then the mission could fail, even if it survived its unlikely landing. It is a well known fact that our true character comes out in times of crisis or survival, and I couldn't think of a better example then being stuck on an isolated planet with poor living conditions.

Overall- I hope in 2023, ten years from now, that there is a reality TV show where people can successfully live on Mars and start a colony, but if not, then at least the idea is entertaining enough for a mock series :)
