How To Save A Life

Due to uni assessment my mind has been circling around the topic of animal rescue and the unfortunate issue of animal euthanasia :(

Countless hours of research on the topic to kick start my mock campaign has seen many interesting views come my way from various animal loving groups.

One site in particular, Pet Rescue, offers one of the best, most researched and well-delivered pro-adoption information I found.

I love what they say and after reading this, see if your position on pet adoption has changed :)

7 Reasons To Adopt- Information thanks to Pet Rescue but worded and interpreted by yours truly.

1.  Lifestyle match

  • Listed by reliable organisations
  •  Health Checked
  •  Assessed for behaviour
  •  Basic manners & toilet trained
  •  Helps you match pet to your lifestyle.

2. You're not starting from scratch (comparing adopted pets to children)

  •  A new puppy is like bringing an infant home- completely untrained &  unsocialised
  •  Adopted puppy has basic manners and experience from previous families.
  • Adopted pet will more likley be content at home.

3. Face Value

  •  When you get a new baby you don’t know what type of adult it will become
  •  Adult personalities aren’t visible at infancy (until 2 years
  •  Adopted pets are already more mature and their personalities are visible

·

4.  Adult pets are better for families

  •  Older pets are better for kids
  •  Little puppies play rough and could harm, bite or scratch toddlers.
  •  Children can get rough with puppies and kittens and cause harm to young animals
  •  Adult pets are generally tame and quiet and are gentle, patient and more docile around children.

·

5.  Stronger Bonds

  • Adopted pets are usually more eager to embrace a loving family and establish bonds.

6. Cost-effective

  •  Rescue pet has been health-checked, desexed, vaccinated and often, wormed and treated for fleas too.
  • Puppies or kittens, all those medical expenses come out of your pocket, on top of the cost of the pet.

7. Set a Good Example For Your Kids

  • Adopting a pet will teach children the valuable lesson of caring for others and the selfless act of giving people a second chance.

So Why Do These Animals End Up In The Shelter?

According to the research from the Pet Rescue site;

There are 2x as many households with pets then there are households with kids, equivalent of over 3.5 million dogs and 2 million cats. Obviously we are a nation that cares for our animals, so why do so many pets end up without homes?

Research says that the majority of homeless pets have homes, but have been lost. Statistics show that only 10% of rescued pets have actually been surrendered to animal rescue organisations and that the large numbers of unowned pets come from the offpring of this 10 %- according to Pet Rescue.

These are just regular pets who need a loving home.

 But The Buzzing Question Is....

Most people are disheartened by the fact that these 'old' and 'used' animals seem to be so pricey and often this decreases the chances of willingness to adopt a homeless animal.

However, all rescue pets must be examined by a licensed vet, vaccinated, micro-chipped and desexed with basic animal training undertaken.

The animal centres kindly pay for this all out of their own pocket so that you don't have to...and it saves alot of time on your behalf! So really, an adoption fee just enables the animal rescue centers to be able to continue this process with each animal that comes through.

In the end, you'd pay more for a store bought puppy and you don't even get the benefits of an adopted puppy.

So If This Has Convinced You?

Adopting a pet is like welcoming a new child into the family. A big decision and alot of choices to be made in order to prepare for this new venture.

The Pet Rescue Site offers a few things to consider before adopting...

  • Do you travel or work long hours? -Maybe avoid adoption
  • Do you have a busy daily timetable? - perhaps an adult cat would suit
  • Planning a major lifestyle change (e.g. marriage) - Maybe postpone adoption
  • Have you got the finances? Think about food, supplies, vet bills...
Great! You Ticked The Right Boxes?

Now you are able to adopt! Finding your local animal pet rescue center is your first step. You should be looking for these qualities.

1. Attentiveness

2. Commitment

3. Attention to detail

4. Responsible
