Relationship Advice

I've been giving a bit of social media and PR advice to a company recently and it came to my attention that not everyone will automatically understand the fundamental need for being social and building relationships with the audience, rather then push a sale.

I once heard that if your business isn't in social media, it's not a business at all.

This called for a practical framework to which the correlation between social media relationships and human relationships becomes apparent.

From a moments worth of Google searching- I identified the main messages of 'romantic' relationships being 3 things.

1# Be realistic

Relationships-

No one is perfect so don't assume your partner is and don't put them on a pedestal- communicate early on in the relationship to avoid misunderstanding.

Social Media-

Don't assume you know your audience's needs and desires. Do the appropriate background research and figure out who your public really is. Communicate tailored messages to your target audience and keep them updated, informed and connected to you.

2# Don't overshare

Relationships-

You should definitely open up to your partner as you are getting to know each other, but be sure not to over share.

Social Media-

Tell your public what they want to hear- irrelevant posts will soon result in your audience un-following you, not sharing as many posts or whining about you to their peers.

3 # Learn from your mistakes

Relationships-

When something inevitable goes wrong between you are your partner, learn from it. Many couples repeat the same mistakes over and over early on, dooming their relationship from the beginning.

 Social Media-

A pretty simple one really, but learning from previous case studies, company downfalls (bankruptcy, crisis..) and keeping a quick and continual check on all uncontrolled media can help ensure that issues or possible crisis are nipped at the bud.
